Head of Payments (India)

Mission of the Role

India is one of the largest, fastest-changing, and most regulation-sensitive payment markets in the world.
Local regulation evolves constantly. Banks impose limits without notice. UPI rules change. PSP behavior shifts. Stability is never guaranteed.

The mission of this role is uncompromising:
ensure maximum payment coverage, high deposit success rates, and stable withdrawals in India — at all times.

Your job is simple to define and hard to execute:
money must always go in and come out.

Key Areas of Ownership:

1. India Payment Methods

• UPI (PSP-based, intent and collect flows).

• Local wallets and bank transfers.

• Cards (limited use, with correct routing).

• Alternative and backup payment methods.

2. PSPs and Banks

• Onboard, manage, and rotate Indian PSPs.

• Build multi-PSP architectures for UPI.

• Control limits, caps, cut-off times, and downtime.

• Execute fast switches during blockings or degradation.

3. Performance and Stability

• UPI and wallet Approval / Success Rates.

• Minimize pending states and timeouts.

• Reduce time-to-credit and time-to-withdrawal.

• Enforce and monitor PSP SLAs.

4. Risk and Regulation

• Work closely with Risk, Fraud, and Compliance teams.

• Deep understanding of RBI constraints and grey zones.

• Balance transaction volume with long-term channel stability.

5. Operational Readiness

• Support Customer Support during payment incidents.

• Rapid hotfixes with Tech and Product teams.

• Crisis management of the entire payment stack.

KPIs You Own:

• UPI Success Rate (market-competitive targets).

• Deposit Coverage (UPI + wallets).

• Uptime of payment methods.

• Time-to-Recovery after failures.

• GGR uplift driven by payment improvements.

Requirements:

Must-Have:

• Proven hands-on payments experience in India.

• Deep expertise in UPI (intent vs collect, limits, flows).

• Practical experience with Indian PSPs and banks.

• Background in high-risk industries (gambling, betting, crypto, etc.).

• Ability to operate under unstable and evolving regulation.

Strong Plus:

• Established relationships with Indian PSPs and banks.

• Experience scaling India from scratch.

• Proven cases of restoring payments after mass blockings.

• Technical understanding of APIs, routing, and retry logic.
