Our client runs an advertising network on TV screens inside local businesses. What makes them different is measurement: proprietary foot-traffic sensors paired with each screen that detect real-world exposure — people passing by, walk-ins, and dwell time. The sensor is their competitive moat and key patent.
You’ll own the sensor device end to end — A to Z: hardware, firmware, wireless detection, testing, and mass production. There are existing prototypes they can ship to you as a starting point, but ideally you’ll rebuild the device from scratch to make it truly production-ready. You’ll work directly with founder — fast decisions, no bureaucracy.
WHAT WILL YOU WORK ON?
Design (or rebuild from scratch) the sensor hardware — schematic, PCB layout, component selection, power design
Develop and optimize firmware on the microcontroller (BLE/wireless stack, sensor data capture, power management)
Make wireless detection reliable in messy real-world conditions — interference, range, multiple devices, varying store layouts
Own testing end-to-end — bench testing and real-environment validation, working independently and reporting to manager
Design for manufacturing: source components and handle mass production procurement (e.g. via Alibaba or similar platforms), prepare for a contract manufacturer, and manage certification (FCC and any wireless compliance)
Build the data path from device to our backend (device → gateway/network → server)
WHAT SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE ARE WE LOOKING FOR?
Electrical Engineer or Embedded Systems Engineer — a true hardware guru. This is a hands-on hardware role first and foremost
4+ years designing embedded devices that shipped — you’ve taken hardware from prototype (or from scratch) to production, not just designed on paper
Strong with RF / wireless, especially BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) — antenna considerations, signal strength, interference
Embedded firmware in C/C++ on microcontrollers (ESP32, Nordic nRF, STM32, or similar)
PCB design (Altium, KiCad, or equivalent) and comfortable with the whole board bring-up process
Experience with FCC / wireless certification
Experience sourcing components and managing production runs through manufacturing marketplaces (Alibaba or similar)
Can work fully independently and close things out — we need a finisher, not someone who needs a team around them
ARE THERE ANY OTHER REQUIREMENTS?
IoT connectivity (WiFi/cellular/MQTT)
Low-power/battery optimization
Sensor fusion or motion/presence detection
Prior consumer-hardware-at-scale experience
