An on-call General Practitioner (GP) provides medical care for patients outside routine clinic hours or when covering for another doctor. Typical duties include:
- Providing urgent medical consultations in person, by telephone, or via telemedicine.
- Assessing, diagnosing, and managing acute illnesses and minor injuries.
- Determining whether a patient can be treated in the community or requires referral to the emergency department or hospital.
- Prescribing medications and arranging emergency prescriptions when appropriate.
- Managing exacerbations of chronic conditions (e.g., asthma, COPD, diabetes, hypertension).
- Conducting home visits for patients who are unable to attend the clinic, where this service is available.
- Reviewing laboratory and imaging results that require urgent action.
- Offering medical advice and support to nursing staff, care homes, or other healthcare providers.
- Arranging referrals to specialists or hospital services when clinically indicated.
- Documenting all consultations, clinical findings, diagnoses, treatments, and follow-up plans accurately.
- Providing clear safety-net advice, including when patients should seek further medical attention.
- Ensuring effective handover of outstanding clinical issues to the patient's usual GP or the next on-call clinician.
